Earthquakes are still rattling Greece’s volcanic island of Santorini every few minutes as authorities bolster their emergency plans in case the hundreds of temblors in recent days are a harbinger of a larger quake to come.

Widespread flooding in central Greece has left at least six people dead and six missing, with severe rainstorms turning streams into raging torrents, bursting dams, washing away roads and bridges, and hurling cars into the sea.

Advancing flames are devouring forests and homes as dozens of wildfires rage across Greece, leaving 20 people dead over the past three days.

Greek authorities are planning tougher penalties for arson with fines to be increased to 10 times the current level.

In an announcement released Monday, Vassilis Kikilias said that despite repeated appeals for private doctors to volunteer to help in the public sector, very few came forward. Kikilias had said Friday he would requisition private sector doctors unless at least 200 volunteered within 48 hours. AdThe requisition order is for one month for 206 doctors, health authorities said. About 500 people are hospitalized each day across the country with COVID-19, health authorities say, with 200 of them being in the wider Athens region.

The second nationwide lockdown, including school closures, was imposed earlier this month until Nov. 30. The field hospital is to have 50 normal beds for COVID-19 patients and two ICU beds. On Monday, authorities said the nationwide occupancy of COVID-19 ICU beds was 86% — and roughly 99% for northern Greece.
