ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A pedestrian was struck and killed during a crash involving a 79-year-old driver over the weekend, according to the Ormond Beach Police Department.

In a release, police said the crash happened on Saturday shortly before 11 p.m. at the intersection of South Orchard Street and Division Avenue.

At the time, two pedestrians heading east along Division Avenue turned left onto South Orchard Street, police added.

Meanwhile, the driver was heading southbound on South Orchard Street “at a high rate of speed” and failed to stop at a stop sign, resulting in him striking one of the pedestrians, the department announced.

That pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene, the release shows.

However, the driver was uninjured and taken to the hospital for further evaluation after showing symptoms “consistent with dementia,” the release continues.

“This is a tragic loss of life and a difficult reminder how quickly lives can change on our roadways,” Police Capt. Chris Roos said. “We strongly urge drivers to obey posted speed limits, remain alert and use extra caution at night, especially when visibility is low and pedestrians are difficult to spot.”
