PORT ORANGE, Fla. – Video shared to social media by the Port Orange Police Department shows officers working to save an elderly driver who veered into a stormwater pond on Monday.
The video shows an officer wading toward the floating car and breaking the side windows in an attempt to get a door open. Another officer soon enters the water and helps the first pull the car closer to the shore, where the driver is eventually seen to be removed from the vehicle.
According to the police department’s post, the driver said the locks on his doors were inoperable and he was unable to open them.
“Officers later learned the elderly driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel before veering off the roadway and into the water,” the post states. “(...) Their quick actions, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to protecting our community prevented what could have been a tragic outcome. Please join us in recognizing Officers Peterson, Velez, and Herstein for their outstanding courage and dedication.”
