SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – If you’ve ever wondered how your local government really works behind the scenes, Seminole County is giving you a chance to find out, and it’s doing it in a way that’s a little different from the norm.

On this edition of Trooper Steve on Patrol, I got a firsthand look at Seminole County’s new take on a Citizens Academy.

Now, you’ve probably heard of these programs before, usually hosted by law enforcement agencies. But this one? It’s bigger, broader, and designed to give you access to multiple departments that keep your community running every day.

Think of it as a mix between a Citizens Academy and an open house.

Throughout the next several weeks, Seminole County is opening its doors to the public, inviting residents to step inside and see how departments like Public Works, Sanitation, Parks and Recreation, and even the Sheriff’s Office operate — both administratively and operationally.

We spent time with the Public Works Department, where the work often goes unnoticed but impacts you every single day. From managing and timing traffic signals to replacing street signs and maintaining roadways, there’s a lot happening behind the curtain that keeps traffic flowing and communities safe.

And here’s the best part: this isn’t just a presentation.

It’s interactive. You’ll get a chance to ask questions, meet the people doing the work, and walk away with a better understanding of how decisions are made and how services are delivered.

If you’re looking to get more connected with your community or just curious about how things actually get done, this is a great opportunity to take a closer look.

The next opportunity to check it out is happening on Thursday, with additional sessions scheduled through May.

For a full list of events and how to participate, head over to Seminole County’s official website.

As always, we’ll see you out there on the next Trooper Steve on Patrol.
