Mother dies saving child who fell in St. Johns River, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office

A DeLand mother died Saturday after jumping into the St. Johns River to save her 4-year-old son, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. Deputies identified the woman as 43-year-old Nicole Grayson. Investigators said the child was playing near a wooden fence at Ed Stone Park west of DeLand when he dropped something over the fence. Deputies said he fell into the river while trying to retrieve it. Grayson jumped in after him.
