More storms on the way: Threat of flooding, severe weather increases in Central Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. – We’ve been dealing with unsettled weather for days now, and unfortunately, we’ve still got a few more to go before things finally dry out.

[STORY CONTINUES BELOW VIDEO FORECAST]

A slow-moving low-pressure system over theDeep South is still driving this active pattern. Moist air from the Gulf continues to stream into Florida, setting the stage for two more very active days.

While the rain is much needed, it’s coming with a catch — a daily threat for strong to severe storms.

Mother’s Day:

As you make plans for Mother’s Day, make sure you have plan indoors during the afternoon as scattered to numerous storms will be possible.

Weather Alert Days Ahead

Winds will pick up behind the sea breeze and storm chances increase as we head into the evening and overnight hours.

We’re under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe storms today, mainly between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Here’s what could come with those stronger cells:

Severe Weather Outlook
  • Gusty winds (40–50 mph, with a few isolated spots reaching 60 mph)
  • Small hail (mostly north of I-4)
  • Frequent lightning
  • Heavy rain leading to minor flooding in low-lying areas

Rainfall totals will range from 0.5 to 1.5 inches for most areas, but where storms repeat, you could see up to 3 to 5 inches.

Early week

That same low shifts northeast, dragging a cold front across Florida. That means more rounds of heavy rain and storms during the majority of Monday. The severe threat continues, along with increasing concern for flooding and isolated tornadoes.

Expect another 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain (locally more), adding to what’s already fallen. Since our grounds have become very saturated over the past seven days, flooding will be a concern. Much of Florida is under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) for excessive rainfall Monday.

Rainfall Outlook

Once the rain finally moves out late Monday, we will start to wind down late Tuesday as drier air moves in behind the front.

Mid to late week:

Hot Weather Outlook

Relief is on the way — at least from the rain.

High pressure builds in midweek, drying us out but cranking up the heat. After a break on Wednesday, temps start climbing into the 90s by Thursday, with mid to upper 90s possible by the weekend. Some inland spots may flirt with daily record highs.
