Sun, sweat and storms: What to expect in Florida over Memorial Day weekend

Afternoon storms make a comeback in Orlando area

ORLANDO, Fla. – Whether you’re planning beach trips, backyard BBQs, or just trying to stay cool, this holiday weekend’s forecast has a little bit of everything: heat, humidity and a few pop-up storms to keep you on your toes.

With mostly sunny skies Friday across Central Florida, expect afternoon highs in the low to mid-90s, with “feels-like” temps nearing 100 degrees.

Friday afternoon into early evening, there’s a decent chance for scattered showers and storms, especially in the southern half of east-central Florida. Storms may start popping up after 1–2 p.m. along the sea breeze and push inland through the evening.

Areas near and north of I-4 should stay mostly dry.

While most storms will be typical summer pop-ups, a few could turn strong, bringing gusty winds up to 60 mph, small hail, frequent lightning and heavy rain.

Holiday weekend

Saturday and Sunday look very summer-like.

Expect highs in the low to mid-90s, with sticky humidity making it feel closer to 100 during the hottest part of the day.

Each afternoon there’s a 30–50% chance of rain and storms, mainly driven by the sea breeze pushing storms inland. Any storms could bring gusty winds, lightning and brief downpours.

If you’re spending time outside, especially if you’re not used to the Florida heat, stay cool, find shade and drink plenty of water.

Storms will fade after sunset each night.

Next week

Looking into Monday through Thursday, there’s not much change.

Highs stay in the upper 80s to low 90s, with heat index values creeping into the 100–105 range.

Expect mainly afternoon and evening storms, focused more inland as the sea breeze takes longer to develop.
