Orange County shooting leaves mother of 2 dead, deputies say

Woman's 7-year-old child called 911 to report mother had been shot

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Investigators are trying to piece together why someone would shoot and kill a mother of two young children.

The shooting happened at 5:30 p.m. Friday at 6000 Yucatan Drive, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Capt. Angelo Nieves told News 6 the woman's 7-year-old child called 911 to report his mother had been shot.

Nieves said the child then gave the operator a description of the suspects, who had driven away.

Investigators wouldn't release the name of the woman on Friday because her family had not been told about her death yet. They only described her as a 45-year-old woman.

Her friends, like roommate Luis Jiminez, called her Mary.

"We didn't know she got shot until the deputy told me," he said. "There's a shooting right there. The neighbors heard it."

Jiminez said the woman was actually homeless. He said his mother met her at church and had been providing them a place to stay over the last year.

He also said their home had been targeted before. Just two weeks ago, they woke up to find windows had been busted out of their home. They reported it to police, he said, but they still don't know who did it.

Friday night, OCSO investigators caught up with the suspect near the intersection of Lee Road and Edgewater Drive.

Efforts to bring him to jail resulted in a deputy firing his gun, wounding the suspect.
