Bail lowered for man accused of helping Markeith Loyd

Judge initially denied bail for Zarghee Mayan

ORLANDO, Fla. – The former boss of the man accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend and Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton appeared before an Orange County judge Wednesday morning and had his bail lowered.

Zarghee Mayan was arrested the day after police said Markeith Loyd fatally shot Clayton at the Walmart store on John Young Parkway on Jan. 9.

Loyd was arrested Tuesday evening at an abandoned house after a nine-day manhunt.

Mayan faces charges of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. He was denied bail during his first appearance last week. During Wednesday's hearing, a judge set Mayan's bail at $400,000 to be paid in cash or with full collateral. He was also ordered to surrender his passport.

Mayan's attorney, Lyle Mazin, filed a motion Thursday to have his client's bail lowered to less than $10,000.

In court, Mayan's sister-in-law, Bibihalima Mayan, testified on his behalf, saying he has four children that need him.

Mayan cried throughout most of her testimony, and when asked why her brother-in-law was carrying $1,100, her husband, Sohail Mayan, jumped up and yelled "It was rent money."

Sohail Mayan was escorted out of the courtroom.

The state said the outburst was proof Sohail Mayan was feeding his wife answers.

Mazin said that his client was forced at gunpoint to drive Loyd after the death of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, 24. Mayan and Loyd were never friends, only colleagues, Mazin said.

Two days before Loyd allegedly shot and killed Clayton, Loyd went to Mayan, asking for food and money, according to the arrest report.
