Orlando man's death after bar attack 'like a knife to the heart' to family

Kevin Dunn was knocked out after confronting man about theft, deputies say

ORLANDO, Fla. – A man who was attacked outside an Orange County bar during a confrontation over a theft has died, according to the victim's family.

A family member told News 6 that Kevin Dunn died Sunday after he was left with life-threatening injuries from the Nov. 15 incident at George's Hideaway Bar and Grill on Edgewater Drive in Orlando.

Dunn was taken off life support Sunday night.

"Still every time we say that he's passed it's like a knife to the heart," Dunn's stepdaughter Mindy Maurent said.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, Dunn walked outside the bar, heard a man arguing with a bartender and walked toward them. The man punched Dunn, causing him to fall and hit his head, deputies said.

The argument started after the man was accused of stealing money left at the bar to cover a bill, officials said.

"The person that attacked him [Dunn] bought him a shot that night," Maurent said. "That's the kind of person he was. He was a wonderful person and it saddens us that someone so wonderful could be taken from us."

CPR was performed on Dunn, who was taken to a hospital. Doctors said Dunn also suffered a heart attack. Dunn's official cause of death has not been released.

A bartender at George’s Hideaway told News 6 that Dunn was a regular who visited the bar about once a week. Deputies said Dunn bought the wanted man a shot of Patron before he was attacked.

Deputies told News 6 the man will likely face manslaughter charges because the case went from an aggravated battery case to a death investigation.

"It does not appear from what we understand of there being any intent of some kind," Jeff Williamson, OCSO spokesman, said. "When there is no intent to kill someone or it doesn't appear to be any intent to kill someone it's more along the lines of manslaughter."

Williamson said the Orange County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

The Sheriff’s Office released photos and surveillance video from George’s Hideaway to help identify the assailant, but he remains at large.

Anyone with information about the culprit's identify is asked to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.

Dunn's family has set up a GoFundMe account to help with funeral expenses.
