Person shot at Orlando food market, car fire reported nearby

Both incidents related, deputies say

ORLANDO, Fla. – A person was fatally shot Friday afternoon at a small food market on Ivey Lane in Orlando, and shortly afterward a car fire was reported nearby, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

A masked shooter wearing a hoodie killed Antonio Smith, 22, and then fled in a stolen car, officials said. The car was then found on fire nearby on Conley Street.

Pictures from the scene at Big Brothers Food Mart show the glass front door shattered and crime scene tape surrounding the parking lot.

"People are frustrated. People (are) saying, 'Enough is enough,' and I think, collectively, as a community, there's no one solution," Bishop Kelvin Cobaris said. "I think we have to work together to curb this crime."

Cobaris said he was driving down Ivey Lane when he saw the blue lights at the Big Brothers convenience store.

"I immediately stopped, got a briefing and I said, 'OK, I know what I can do,' and immediately went on Facebook Live to share the information," Cobaris said.

He said he took out his phone and started streaming, telling his followers that Smith had been shot and killed by a masked man wearing a hoodie.

"If this was your child, your cousin, your friend, what would you want the community to do? Call in to Crimeline," Cobaris said on his Facebook Live.

Deputies said the suspect took off in the stolen car, only to torch it just blocks away.

"This idea of not snitching has got to be out the window. You have to put yourself in the shoes of the family members that are hurting tonight over their loved one," Colbaris said. "What would you want the community to do if your loved one was gunned down today?"

Cobaris' post has already been viewed over 1,000 times. He told News 6 that social media really helps reach a younger audience and that, on social media, people start to listen.

"I took it upon myself to go to my social media. I have thousands of followers so I said, Somebody knows something, so let's put it out there,'" Colbaris said.

This is the second shooting in the area this week.

Around 2 a.m. Sunday, four people were shot and two people were struck by a vehicle on Ivey Lane near Conley Street, just a few blocks from Friday's crime scene.

In that incident, a large crowd gathered and then multiple shots were fired. The four gunshot victims, three men and one woman, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were able to transport themselves to the hospital.

When people were scattering as a result of the gunfire, two women were struck by a vehicle. One suffered serious injuries and the other suffered minor injuries.

It's unknown if there's any connection between Sunday's shooting and Friday's shooting.
