ORLANDO, Fla. – It’s a common question many drivers have when they see orange barrels and flashing signs: Are all fines doubled in a construction zone?
The short answer is: No.
According to Florida Statute 318.18, it’s specifically speeding violations that carry doubled fines when workers are present in a construction or maintenance zone.
The law is designed to protect road crews who often work just feet away from traffic. For example, if you’re ticketed for going 15 mph over the posted limit, your fine will be twice as much as it normally would outside that zone.

Other violations, like not wearing a seat belt, an expired registration or texting while driving, are not automatically doubled under this statute.
But that doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. Florida also designates construction zones as hands-free zones, which means you cannot hold your phone to talk, text or scroll while driving through these areas. If you’re caught, you could face fines and points on your license.
It’s also important to note that in order for the doubled speeding fines to apply, warning signs must be clearly posted before you enter the zone.
When you approach a construction zone, slow down, put your phone away and stay alert. Not only will you avoid a costly ticket, but you’ll also help keep Florida’s road crews safe.
