New Orange County school changes name to avoid 'IPMS' moniker

School to be named Innovation Middle School

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – At an Orange County Public School board meeting Tuesday night, board members voted to approve the name of a middle school that will open in August.

A name change was suggested from Innovation Park Middle School to Innovation Middle School.

The name change comes after much debate over the acronym IPMS.

"What the parents are concerned about is that the acronym for Innovation Park Middle School is IPMS and it was suggested our colors be red, white and black. They don't want to go to a school and wear a red shirt with the letters IPMS across the shirt for athletics, for academic competitions. They just don't want to be ridiculed or be made fun of from other students from other schools,” parent Christal Feldman told News 6.

District officials said some community members did not agree with the name change, but the name was approved unanimously by board members.

The school, which is in Storey Park, is near the Innovation Way Corrider and Moss Park in southeastern Orange County.

Suggestions for the name were decided by parents, students and community members.
