With natural disasters being a relatively common problem in Florida, it’s little surprise how much of an issue it can be to find an effective homeowner’s insurance provider.

That’s why U.S. News & World Report released its latest list of the best homeowners insurance companies this month, providing some insight into which insurers are best suited to tackle these claims.

The ranking uses factors like availability, rates, coverage options, company reviews and consumer surveys to determine which companies are the cream of the crop.

Looking at cost alone, the cheapest company per U.S. News & World Report is Chubb, though the report notes that state premium data wasn’t available for every company on the list.

Meanwhile, the overall top-ranked companies on that list are as follows:

1. Amica 4.8/5

PROS:

  • No. 1 overall and the cheapest home insurance company in the ranking
  • Rated highest in consumer surveys across categories
  • Choose from standard policy or the more comprehensive Platinum Choice
  • Local offices in Orlando and Tampa

CONS:

  • Average cost data is not available for Florida
  • Not available in Hawaii or Alaska
  • Doesn’t have a local office in every state

“With a score of 4.8 out of 5, Amica places first overall in our best home insurance rating. This score was calculated based on the provider’s average rates, available discounts, types of coverage, optional add-ons, and the results of our consumer survey. Amica secured the No. 1 spot for customers’ evaluation of its claims handling, customer service, and value, as well as their likelihood to renew their policy and recommend the company.

This cost-effective provider has the cheapest sample rates in our analysis and at least nine possible discounts to decrease your premium. You may be able to save with a multi-policy discount, for example; Amica ties for third place in our home and auto bundle ranking."

2. USAA 4.6/5

PROS:

  • Provides special gear coverage for active-duty military
  • Identity theft and replacement cost coverage come standard

CONS:

  • Only military personnel and eligible relatives can become members
  • No state-specific average cost data for Florida

“USAA earned impressive scores across the board in our evaluation of the best homeowners insurance and placed second overall behind Amica. In our consumer survey, USAA ranked above average for customer service, claims handling, customer loyalty, and value. In the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ consumer complaint index, USAA consistently receives fewer home insurance complaints than the industry average.

This provider is also one of the cheapest options for home insurance, coming in third place with its sample premium. USAA offers several discounts, including the option to bundle your home insurance with another insurance policy – and it’s our No. 1 recommendation for home and auto bundles."

3. State Farm 4.5/5

PROS:

  • One of the cheapest home insurance options in Florida, per the study
  • Inflation coverage is included in standard policy

CONS:

  • Online quotes not available for Florida ZIP codes
  • Fewer endorsement options than some competitors

“Despite low scores in our consumer survey, State Farm ranks at No. 3 overall in our best home insurance rating, based on its low cost, coverage options, discounts, and more.

On our cheapest home insurance list, this provider has a sample rate of $129 per month, which is second only to Amica’s $97 average premium. State Farm also offers several discounts; however, it did not qualify for our ranking of the best home and auto bundles."

4. Chubb 4.4/5

PROS:

  • Masterpiece policy includes replacement cost, water backup and risk consulting
  • Florida homeowners can enroll in Chubb’s Wildfire Defense Services
  • Received above-average scores for customer loyalty and value

CONS:

  • Fewer discounts than other providers in the analysis
  • Some coverage limits are capped in Florida
  • Falls below average for price and customer service

“With a score of 4.4 out of 5, Chubb places fourth out of 10 companies in our best home insurance rating. This insurer ranks at No. 3 for customer loyalty and No. 4 for value, according to the consumers we surveyed, but its scores were below average for customer service and claims handling. However, Chubb had fewer survey respondents than other providers in our rating.

Additionally, Chubb fell slightly below average in our list of cheapest home insurance, coming in sixth place out of nine providers. It offers some discounts, though they may vary by state. Chubb did not make our ranking for the best home and auto bundles."

5. Auto-Owners 4.3/5

PROS:

  • Offers inland flood coverage as an add-on rather than a separate policy
  • Wide variety of endorsement and discount options
  • Ranks at No. 2 for customer service in the survey

CONS:

  • The rate study could not get enough data to calculate average cost in Florida
  • Customers can’t apply for a quote or file a claim online
  • Only available in 26 states

“Auto-Owners ranks at No. 5 in our rating of the best home insurance companies. It placed above average in most categories of our consumer survey, though it fell slightly below average in respondents’ assessment of its value. In recent years, Auto-Owners consistently received fewer consumer complaints for home insurance than the industry average, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

This provider is the No. 4 cheapest option for homeowners insurance and offers plenty of discount opportunities. For example, you may be able to lower your premium with a favorable loss history, protective devices, an automatic backup generator, paperless billing, and more."
