INDIAN HARBOUR BEACH, Fla. – A toddler drowned Monday after he walked through a sliding glass door and fell into the swimming pool behind his Indian Harbour Beach home, according to police.

Lt. Mark Rowley of the Indian Harbour Beach Police Department said about 4:25 p.m. officers went to 1123 Cheyenne Drive, which is down the street from police headquarters. Officers said they found 21-year-old Alexander Stabilito performing CPR on his 19-month-old son, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

The officers took over the father's efforts to resuscitate the boy. The child was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

"It was reported that the sliding glass door had been left open," Rowley said. "The child may have been in the (in-ground) pool five to 10 minutes."

What the father was doing at the time the toddler walked outside was not immediately known.

Stabilito has an arrest record in Brevard County, including charges of disorderly intoxication this year and marijuana possession in 2008. All the charges were dropped or resolved before trial.

Local court records also show that Stabilito was involved in domestic-violence proceedings with 20-year-old Sarah Elizabeth Roble, of Satellite Beach.

Rowley said detectives are investigating the case and their findings will be sent to the Brevard-Seminole State Attorney's Office, which will determine whether charges should be filed.

The Florida Department of Children and Families also was notified of the incident.
