Details surface in jail release of man accused in deputy slaying

Man's girlfriend, Andria Kerchner, transferred to Orange County Jail

MELBOURNE, Fla. – More details have surfaced on how Brandon Bradley, the man who authorities say shot and killed a Brevard County deputy, was released from jail in October after tricking authorities.

Bradley, 22, and Andria Kerchner,19, have been charged with murder in the death of Deputy Barbara Pill, who was shot multiple times Tuesday morning in Melbourne.

Several months ago, Bradley was caught running from Melbourne police while throwing down a 9 millimeter Glock handgun during the chase, cocaine and ecstasy, records show.

Police said a Taser was used to take Bradley down. He had no driver's license, so when deputies asked for his name, he gave his brother's name, Keith Alan Nelson. Jail video shows that Bradley knew enough about his brother to convince officers he was Nelson after being asked his brother's Social Security number and date of birth.

Nelson was 3 inches taller than Bradley and more than two years older, but police say the man in custody resembled Nelson's driver's license photo, so no suspicions were heightened about his true identity.

There were no warrants out for Nelson's arrest, but Bradley had an outstanding warrant out for his arrest in February 2011 for violation of probation-failing a drug test. Prosecutors said they would have sought Bradley's return to prison on 2008 robbery and drug charges if he had to be jailed under his name.

But the Brevard jail failed to compare Bradley's fingerprints with a database of known felons and fugitives so Bradley was released on $7,600 bond on Oct. 1 under the name of Keith Nelson.

Authorities realized the mistake a week later when his fingerprints were checked.

Melbourne police said they grew suspicious about the release after federal authorities told them Bradley's name was connected to an alias to Nelson.

The Brevard sheriff's office, which runs the jail, said it is unaware of any investigation into the mistaken release being initiated until after Bradley was accused of murdering one of their deputies this week.

Brevard County deputies have not commented on the release, saying it has to "find out what took place ourselves."

A music video was also found on Facebook of Bradley, under the name "Luwie."  In the video, he's wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and staging a home invasion with other rappers.

The music video also features rapping about carjacking and robbery.

Meanwhile, Kerchner was transferred from the Brevard County Jail to Orange County Jail on Thursday. It is unclear why she was transferred.

Bradley was also transferred to John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Seminole County.
