CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Brevard County sheriff's deputies said the man discovered Tuesday afternoon near the former launch pad for the space shuttle program at Kennedy Space Center died of natural causes.
Officials said the body of a man was discovered at 2:15 p.m. at a storage building near the liquid oxygen tank at launch pad 39A.
"As an employee, he had access, but they are doing some construction work out at Pad A. I'm not sure why he was out there specifically," said Andrea Thomas of NASA.
Fire and rescue officials were not able to revive the man, who they say was an employee of the Brevard Achievement Center, which provides custodial service for KSC. The Brevard Achievement Center assists individuals with disabilities get jobs and have social independence, according to its website.
BAC officials confirmed it was one of their workers who died, but said they won't release the name until they notify the family.
Officials said the worker was a male in his 50s who had been with the center since 2003. The man was assigned at KSC in 2008, officials said.
NASA security and Brevard County Sheriff's Office are investigating.
