Thief arrested for robbing woman at Taco Bell

Police found suspect using a photo the victim took

CLERMONT, Fla. – Police have arrested a man who is accused of robbing a woman outside a Taco Bell in Clermont.

According to authorities, Richard Scates stole a woman's money bag from her unzipped purse as she exited the Taco Bell restaurant at 1810 East Highway 50.

The robbery happened at about 2:35 p.m. as the victim walked to her car near the rear of the restaurant. The victim ran after the suspect as he fled to his vehicle. Police said she tried opening the vehicle's passenger door. Her hand was injured when he quickly sped away from the scene.

The victim said the robber got away with $225.00 in cash and $95.00 in personal checks.

Investigators said a photo the victim took of the subject's vehicle license plate with her cell phone as he sped away led them to Graffiti Junction restaurant, where he works.

The victim and an independent witness were able to positively identify the suspect.
