No weapons found in metal detector screenings at schools, Orange Co. officials say

Random screenings taking place at 184 Orlando-area schools

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orange County Public Schools officials say they have not found any weapons by using metal detectors for random screenings at area schools.

"To date the random screenings with metal detectors in our schools have produced no firearms," said Superintendent Barbara Jenkins in a prepared statement.

OCPS officials said no bladed items or blunt objects were seized either.

District officials said on Monday that the screenings could take place at any of their 184 schools but they are keeping the exact days and locations a secret.

The random metal detector screenings will continue until school is out next week. It's not clear if the district will continue screenings in the fall.

Officials have said they're evaluating how the screenings have been working in the past week before deciding on what to do in the future.

The random screenings come after two recent weapon scares, prompting the district to provide another level of protection for students and comfort for their parents.
