ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The people behind Altamonte Springs' Majesty Building, also known as the I-4 Eyesore, tell Local 6 there is still no projected completion date for the mixed-use building.
Claud Bowers, a representative for the building's owners, says the developers have a "pay as you go" attitude toward the construction. Bowers says since construction started in 2001, about $100,000 is spent each month on the project.
Bowers says over the last 18 months much of the work has been happening underground on the building's parking garage. That's now finished, so crews will move on to the above ground portions of the garage, the building's interior and landscaping.
According to Bowers the project lulled even further after the state of Florida took land away from the project for the expansion of I-4.
Now, Bowers says more visible construction will begin within the next few weeks.
Since the building has been sitting for so long with unfinished portions exposed to the elements, Local 6 took concerns about the building's safety to the city of Altamonte Springs.
Anthony Apfelbeck, head of the city's building department, said the construction site has passed all of its half-yearly safety inspections. The inspections are also conducted to prove the site is still eligible for a building permit. Apfelbeck says as long as the builders can demonstrate limited progress the permit is valid.
More than $30 million has been spent on the project since crews broke ground. It's planned as an office tower with retail space. It's set to house the headquarters of the SuperChannel, a Christian commerical TV station.
Last year, Bowers said the project would almost be finished by now, but there's a lot more work to be completed.
