Fire damages building near popular Wekiva Island bar

Cause of blaze under investigation

LONGWOOD, Fla. – For the second time in three months, a fire broke out at Wekiva Island near Wekiva Springs Road.

Crews told Local 6 the fire started around 1 a.m. Monday in a classroom building. Firefighters say the building's sprinkler system helped extinguish the flames quickly.

The cause remains under investigation.

This isn't the first fire incident at the popular riverfront destination. In October, a marina bar along the river burned to the ground.

In 1999, a bar at the same location -- then known as Alexander's Riverfront Restaurant -- was also destroyed in a fire. That blaze was sparked by bad wiring, according to the state fire marshal, who ruled that the fire was accidental.
