Female manatee rescued at New Smyrna Beach Rescue team carried her back into the water
Female manatee rescued on Wednesday.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Rescue workers from the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute carried a live female manatee that washed ashore back to the ocean Wednesday afternoon.
Rescue worker Rachel Cimino, from the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute said at 9:45 a.m. they received a call about a stranded manatee. At first the rescue team waited because it is natural for female manatees to swim to shallow water during mating season, however, this manatee stayed on the shore and actually moved away from the water.
Cimino said rescue workers believed the manatee was too tired to get herself back to the water. The rescue effort lasted until 3:30 p.m. and resulted in the team using a canvas stretcher to lift and carry her back to the water.
This happened at Disappearing Island, in New Smyrna Beach. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office was there to help, too.
A vet was there to instruct the team on how to give the manatee oxygen during the rescue, Cimino said.
