'Swatting' call to police made in Oviedo

Caller reported fatal shooting occurred at home on Running Springs Loop

A hoax 911 call is made in Oviedo.

OVIEDO, Fla. – A call from a man reporting a fatal shooting at a home in Oviedo turned out to be a hoax, according to police.

The caller, who dialed the non-emergency police line around 4 a.m. Friday, said that someone had been shot and killed at a home on Running Springs Loop near Lockwood Boulevard, prompting authorities to surround the house and attempt to communicate with anyone inside.

Oviedo police went to the home only to find that a family was asleep inside and no one had been injured.

Family members went to the Oviedo Police Department to try to identify the voice, but they told Local 6 that they have no idea who placed the 911 call.

The hoax call may have been a prank known as "swatting," which is done in an attempt to get a SWAT team to respond.  It's typically done as a prank or for revenge, according to the FBI.

An investigation is ongoing as Oviedo police try to find out who made the hoax call.
