PALM BAY, Fla. – Palm Bay police continue to search for a 24-year-old babysitter who called 911 to report that an infant was unconscious and not breathing.
Police said Joseph Lamay is wanted for questioning in the death of 4-month-old Lorenzo Hernandez, but officials added that Lamay is not a suspect at this time.
Authorities were called around 1 a.m. Friday to an apartment in Palm Bay after Lamay contacted 911. When paramedics arrived, they rushed Hernandez to the hospital where he later died, according to officials.
"My grandson was 4 months old and I'm going to go through my life not knowing who he was," said Frank Cintron, Hernandez's grandfather.
Investigators said Lamay, Lorenzo's mother's boyfriend, was babysitting the 4-month-old and was the only person in contact with him after the baby's father put him to sleep around 10:30 p.m. Thursday. He talked to detectives then, but hasn't been seen since.
"The bottom line is we're looking for him," said Yvonne Martinez with Palm Bay police. "We need to speak with him. We have questions that only he can answer."
Martinez said there is a warrant out for Lamay's arrest on an earlier probation charge.
"I do find it suspicious that all of a sudden he's nowhere to be found and can't be contacted," said Cintron. "Hopefully he'll come forward after seeing this."
Investigators are awaiting autopsy results to determine Hernandez's manner and cause of death.
Anyone with information on Lamay's whereabouts is asked to call the Palm Bay Police Department at 321-952-3539.
