Teacher pinned between cars in pickup line at Volusia school

DELTONA, Fla. – A teacher was airlifted to a hospital after she was pinned between two cars in the pickup line at a Volusia County elementary school, according to officials.

Wendy Scorpio, 39, a first-grade teacher, was injured Tuesday at Timbercrest Elementary School at 2401 Eustace Avenue in Deltona, Volusia County deputies said.

According to deputies, Scorpio was at the parent pick up loop just after 2 p.m. when an 18-year-old driver's vehicle lurched forward, striking the vehicle in front of him and pinning Scorpio between the two vehicles.

Scorpio was airlifted by a Volusia County Sheriff's Office helicopter to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach with serious abdominal and arm injuries.

The drivers of the two vehicles were not injured.

Deputies are investigating what caused the vehicle to lunge forward.
