Woman body-surfing bitten by shark off Melbourne Beach

Victim taken to hospital with 'pretty significant bite'

MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. – A shark bit a woman on her right hand as she body surfed off Melbourne Beach.

The attack happened just after 3:30 p.m. Sunday near Ocean Avenue.

The woman told paramedics that the shark about 3 feet long. She said the shark "swatted" at her with its fin, then turned and bit her hand, according to officials.

The woman was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne for treatment. Her wound was described as "a pretty significant bite," but she was expected to be OK.
