TITUSVILLE, Fla. – Titusville's Miracle City Mall on U.S. 1 used to be a popular spot, but over the years businesses moved out and it fell into disrepair.
However, after years of the community wanting something else on the property, work is happening to do just that. After several delays, the mall is in the process of being demolished.
The owners of the property are planning to turn the site into Titus Landing -- a $60 million open air mall with shops, entertainment, and even a grocery store.
"What makes me excited is that a lot of things are going to be outdoors," said Dennis Collins. "I think it's going to be really nice. Hopefully we'll get some nice restaurants."
Collins has lived in Titusville since the '90s and says the open air mall is the best thing to happen to the city.
He hopes it'll revitalize the area, which was hit hard by the loss of the space shuttle program.
"I think it's going to be a boom for the economy here. I think it's going to be a miniature Viera," he said.
And all that's left is getting the old, abandoned building torn down.
The property's owner received the required demolition permits earlier this month and crews are in the process of removing asbestos before more heavy equipment can be brought in.
When the demolition company decides to bring out the wrecking ball, local leaders are planning to have a celebration, which is said to be happening by the end of January.
