Sanford RiverWalk expands

Area lines St. Johns River

SANFORD, Fla. – The RiverWalk in Sanford just got three quarters of a mile longer.

The total is now 1 mile and three quarters, lining the St. Johns River in front of Central Florida Regional Hospital.

The walking, jogging and biking trail is a new initiative encouraging the community to live a healthier lifestyle.

There are plans to extend the RiverWalk to Interstate 4 at a cost of $10 to$15 million.  Sanford Mayor Jeffery Triplett says before that happens, however, the 75-year-old seawall has to be replaced and the speed limit on U.S. Highway 17-92 would need to be reduced or they would divert major traffic to State Road 46 to make the RiverWalk safer.

If all the plans are approved, the mayor hopes to extend the RiverWalk to the Florida walking trail system.
