2 children dead, infant critical in Palm Bay homicide, police say
Officers find woman armed with knife outside home on Kenmore Street Northwest
PALM BAY, Fla. – A 7-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy are dead, and a 5-month-old boy is in critical condition after a homicide in Palm Bay, police said.
The incident happened before 6 p.m. Friday at a home on Kenmore Street Northwest.
When patrol officers arrived, they saw a woman outside the home and she was armed with a knife, according to Palm Bay police.
Police then found three children unresponsive with serious injuries. Palm Bay police originally said they were responding to a reported stabbing, but the details of how the children were injured or killed have not been confirmed, police said.
The children have been identified by police as Laci McCarty, 7, Philip McCarty, 6, and 5-month-old Christopher Swist.
Police said Laci was pronounced dead Friday evening at a local hospital and Philip was pronounced dead at 11:22 p.m. Friday. Christopher was listed in critical condition and was taken to an Orlando hospital for further treatment.
The children's 33-year-old mother, Jessica McCarty, was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Detectives are waiting to interview her, police said.
The father of one of the children arrived at the home immediately after the first 911 call. Police said he called 911 after finding the children unresponsive.
"A crime like this is beyond words," said Cmdr. John Resh. "It is unthinkable that someone could do this to innocent children."
Police said detectives are in the process of conducting interviews and documenting the crime scene as the investigation continues.
