Sanford's Flea World closes for good

Flea market has been a shopping staple since 1982

ORLANDO, Fla. – Flea World, a Central Florida institution for 33 years, closed for the last time on Sunday.

The flea market, located on U.S. 17-92 in Sanford, attracted millions of visitors each year.

The collection of booths and tents billed itself as one of the largest open-air malls in the country.

Flea World will be replaced as soon as next year by the Regan Center, a $300 million development expected to stretch 118 acres and be home to apartments, restaurants and shops.

Developers are already calling the project "the new heart of Seminole County."
