Mount Dora residents complain of stinky landfill

Residents say stench stems from Mount Dora Disposal and Fill

MOUNT DORA, Fla. – There's no secret that the Lake County city of Mount Dora is bustling, and one, if not, the largest neighborhoods, there is Sullivan Ranch.

"It's just a wonderful area for kids, and for families to move to," said Ryan Gelatka. "It's been great so far, other than one obvious issue."

And that obvious issue is a stinky one.

Neighbors say the smell of rotten eggs and garbage is constant, and it's now even starting to seep into their homes.

"There's been several mornings where I get up and I'm asking the kids, 'OK. Who didn't flush or who didn't wipe,'" said Kristy Maguire. "But it's the whole neighborhood and the bus stop. It's just really bad."

Maguire moved to the neighborhood a month and a half ago. She says she never noticed the smell until she moved in.

"You can decorate all you want, but Febreeze just doesn't do it," said Maguire.

She's convinced the smell stems from the nearby Mount Dora Disposal and Fill, which is just a few hundred yards from the neighborhood.

The landfill is only supposed to be used for construction and landscaping debris, but neighbors are skeptical.

"It doesn't smell like construction debris. It doesn't smell like cement or stuff that you would consider organic in nature," said Gelatka. "It smells like something that's rotten and it smells like trash."

So, he and his neighbors filed a petition with more than 60 signatures for the state to investigate.

Officials with the landfill never returned News 6's calls, and it's been the same for neighbors, who just want some peace of mind.

"We just petitioned to get answers," said Maguire. "We have our speculations but it's inhabitable, that's how bad it gets. We just want to be outside."
