FDOT officials discuss new I-4 express lanes

New lanes could cost drivers more

FLORIDA – Changes could be coming to the morning commute, WTSP reports.

FDOT officials will host a meeting Monday night from 5:30 p.m to 7:30 p.m at T-Pepin's Hospitality Center in Tampa to ask residents their opinions on express lanes being added to interstate 4.

Construction has already begun along the Veterans Expressway to add an express toll lane and the FDOT wants similar lanes on I-4. The new toll lane could cost anywhere from under a dollar to $10 per car for one trip.

The new lane would stretch along I-4 from east of 50th Street to the Polk Parkway, through Hillsborough and Polk counties. Sunpass will be required for lane payment.

"We are finding across the United States that this really is improving congestion and we have a lot of congestion in the bay area we need to deal with," Kris Carson of FDOT said.

"There is definitely a mixed bag of opinions across the country, but once the express lanes are put in, people love them. They realize it's an option and they don't have to get in it if they don't need them, but if they are running late to the airport or day care or wherever, they can hop in them."
