DeLAND, Fla. – A jewelry store's holiday promotion offering a free shotgun to customers is catching the attention of shoppers in downtown DeLand.
A banner advertising the deal hangs outside Downtown Goldsmith Jewelry & Engraving and 2nd Amendment Firearms at 139 N. Woodland Blvd.
Jessie Czerok, who owns the combined jewelry and gun shop, said the idea was hatched out of a passion she shares with her husband.
"We kind of took the take off the shotgun wedding and twisted it a little bit so more people could get involved," Czerok said.
The Christmas special offers a free 12-gauge shotgun to customers who purchase certain pieces of jewelry priced from $450.
"Get something for your wife, (and) you get a shotgun for free," Czerok said. "(It's) a little incentive to buy some jewelry for their wives."
Randy Greene and his wife were taking advantage of the special on Tuesday with the purchase of a diamond ring.
"I thought, 'What better time to come down and buy a shotgun and get a ring at the same time?'" Greene said.
Others passing by the advertised special questioned the message, especially in the midst of a national debate on gun control.
"All this stuff we're seeing in the world, we're seeing too much of it," Paul Richter said.
Czerok said she hasn't received any negative feedback and added that background checks are conducted for every person who receives a free gun.
"We are doing everything you legally have to do to purchase a firearm," Czerok said. "So these are not just going on the street to anybody."
This is the third year the retail shop has held the Christmas promotion. The same deal is also offered in February, leading up to Valentine's Day.
