1 rescued, 1 killed in fiery RV crash identified

RV exited I-95, crashed into tree, police say

ORMOND BEACH, Fla – One person was killed, and a second person injured after an RV crashed and burst into flames, according to authorities.

The crash happened along U.S. 1 near the interchange with Interstate 95 in Ormond Beach at 1 a.m.

Police say the RV had exited southbound I-95 onto US 1 and continued straight toward Dairy Queen, where it struck a tree and exploded.

People who heard the crash were able to rescue William Byrd, 58, from the RV, which had ignited after the crash, according to police. Byrd, who is from Alparetta, Georgia, suffered serious burns and was taken to the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital.

Craig Leigh, 78, of Piedmont, South Carolina, was unable to be rescued, police said.

Police closed off the area, including a nearby gas station after the crash.
