Palm Bay 3rd-grader named state winner of Doodle 4 Google contest, competes nationally

Third-grader doodles for Google's $30,000 scholarship contest

PALM BAY, Fla. – Whoever said not to draw during class is missing out on a $30,000 scholarship from Google. 

A third-grade student at Westside Elementary is competing in the national 2016 "Doodle 4 Google" contest for a chance to win a $30,000 scholarship for himself and $50,000 for his school.

Palm Bay resident Landen Slater, is the state winner of Google's "Doodle 4 Google" contest, where students in grades K-12 compete across the nation to design a "doodle" that will appear on Google's homepage. 

"Landen's drawing is titled 'Google Tool Time' and pays tribute to his father who does carpentry. Landen frequently spends time working with on projects with his dad, learning to build things just like him.  He says that because of this time with his grandfather tools are now a part of his life," according to a news release from the City of Palm Bay. 

Landen was honored at the City Council meeting last week along with his teacher and his family. Palm Bay Mayor William Capote presented Landon with a certificate of achievement, for his artistic talent. People can go online and vote for the Google 4 Doodle winner, which closes Monday.
