Deputies discovered Tyler Sheaffer, 19, with a gunshot wound in right leg below the calf. He contacted his mother who came to the location to pick-up Sheaffer and take him to Florida Hospital Fish memorial in Orange City, deputies said.

Once at the hospital, Sheaffer told deputies he had been walking home when a passing car pulled up and the occupants told Sheaffer to get out of the road. Sheaffer said that  after words were exchanged, the driver got out of the car and pointed a gun at him, according to deputies.

Sheaffer said he turned to run as the man fired approximately 10 times, with one round striking him in the leg.

Deputies said that Sheaffer didn't know either of the men in the car.

The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.
