Teen accidentally shoots self while running from gunfire in Orange County
15-year-old suffers non-life-threatening injury
APOPKA, Fla. – An Orange County teen is recovering after accidentally shooting himself while trying to escape gunfire.
The accident happened near Warren Sapp Drive and Monk Avenue in Apopka.
Deputies say the 15-year-old told them he was in the area when he heard gunshots and took out a gun to defend himself.
Investigators say when he tried to run away from the gunfire, he accidentally shot himself.
The teen suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
It's not known what sparked the initial gunfire, and an investigation is ongoing.
