ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando city leaders on Monday approved a first reading of a plan that would close the door to any new after-hour clubs opening up in the city.

At Monday night's meeting, the Orlando City Council approved the first read on restricting after-hour (past 2 a.m.) clubs.

Commissioners put a temporary ban in place last year after a club opened with hours extended to 6 a.m. The club was able to stay open after hours because it didn't sell alcohol.

Critics say the extended hours are a safety risk and put too big of a strain on police.

A second reading will take place on September 15.
