TITUSVILLE, Fla. – Titusville police officers are getting results for a woman who lost her apartment during Hurricane Matthew.
It's been more than a month since anyone could live at Bay Towers on US-1. Now displaced tenant Julia Bennett is thanking police for helping her slowly get back to normal.
"Everything was totaled in my apartment," Bennett told News 6 Friday.
She and her husband evacuated Bay Towers before Matthew hit, but when they returned after the storm, like more than 100 other tenants, they were kicked out.
"Our apartment alone took 3 inches of water if not more," Bennett said. "Then the mold started to grow and that was just even better," she joked.
With help from Section 8, Bennett searched for a new home, but unlucky for her, the duplex she's now living in has no power, no running water and until this Thursday, no furniture.
"I literally, just got back from taking a shower at a friend's house," Bennett said.
Enter her hero.
Cpl. Michael Lindo with other officers looked around town this week and found what they could, delivering furniture including a bed to Bennett's Lucky Street home Thursday.
"Everything you guys did yesterday, it means so much to me and it means so much to my family," Bennett said, thanking Cpl. Lindo Friday.
"That's what we do. I mean, we do this every day. We help kids. We help families," Lindo said.
"For them to go above and beyond it took a piece of my heart. It really did," Bennett said.
Titusville police said they welcome any call from displaced Bay Towers tenants. If you are still struggling, police say they might be able to help you too.
