Accidental shootings increase during holidays

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s the most wonderful time of the year but it can also be the most dangerous.
Studies show a spike in the number of accidental shootings from Christmas Eve up until New Year's.

Our Crime and Safety Analyst Gil Smith says there are many reasons why this seems to be happening. The studies show it’s mostly males around the age of 19, and a lot of times, it happens in the home. These are all factors showing why responsible gun use is so important.

They're a popular gift during the holidays, but studies show, firearms are the reason the happiest season is also the deadliest.

"The deadliest time for accidental shootings is between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day," said Smith.

Over the last 2 years, 32 people were killed and 59 were injured during that weeklong timeframe nationwide. Three recent cases happened in Jacksonville.

Smith says there's a number of reasons why this happens, aside from more guns being bought.

"Kids are out of school and parents are preparing for the holidays and they're not as attentive to their unsecured weapons. Another thing is you have adults that are drinking during the holidays," said Smith.

This is why Smith says basic gun safety should always be a top priority.

Lock them up so kids can't get to them. But Smith also says with crime growing during the holidays, gun owners understandably have them ready to grab quickly.

“There's a Catch 22 there. You want your weapon accessible and ready, but at the same time, you need to keep it safe and secure from your children," said Smith.

Smith says another good rule of thumb for firearm safety is to adopt the mindset that the gun is always loaded. Even if you know it's not loaded, check to verify that all of the bullets are out.
