Fort Lauderdale flights diverted to Orlando after airport shooting

5 people killed, 6 people injured during Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International

ORLANDO, Fla. – Several flights that were scheduled to land at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International have been diverted to Orlando International Airport after a mass shooting left five people dead and another six injured.

Orlando airport officials said as of 5 p.m. Friday, 13 Fort Lauderdale flights were diverted to Orlando and five daily service flights between Orlando and Fort Lauderdale were canceled.

Travelers at OIA might see an increased security presence inside and outside the main terminal building, according to a news release.

"While there have been no federal directives, there is heightened surveillance in the terminal," airport officials said in a statement. "All agencies including federal, local law enforcement and airport security representatives are engaged and are monitoring airport security closely. Security is everyone's responsibility and airport staff and users are reminded, 'If you see something, say something.'"

Security was still stepped up Saturday. Departure boards showed flights to Fort Lauderdale resumed, but some travelers were still felt uneasy about boarding a plane.

"Am I nervous? A little bit, yeah because I don't know if I'll come back," Ashanti Ferguson said.

Other travelers say they felt safer with the increased security presence.

"I would suspect there's so many people watching us right now in plain clothes and from locations you can't quite see right now," Jack Conroy said.

An Orlando Airport flight tracker is available at orlandoairports.net/flights.

A gunman, identified as 26-year-old Esteban Santiago, opened fire at a baggage claim area in the Fort Lauderdale airport shortly before 1 p.m. Friday, authorities said. Read more about the shooting here
