Volunteers build playground for children in matter of hours

Over 200 volunteers work to bring playground to apartment complex

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Hundreds of children in one Central Florida community are getting a new playground that was built from the ground up in a matter of hours.

More than 200 volunteers came together Friday to bring the playground to the Golden Oaks Apartments, which provides low-income housing to families in need.

The project came together through KaBOOM and Disney, which is celebrating its 75th playground build.

"We have brought the magic of play to life for so many children in our community as well as across the nation.  It's absolutely amazing," Walt Disney World Ambassador Ken Facey said.

Along with manpower from the Orlando Neighborhood Improvement Corporation, several local families also added their input to designing the 1,200-square-foot playground.

"The kids are super excited; they watch out the window every day seeing the progress. So when they come out and see this, it will be epic," Golden Oaks resident Luz Santiago said.

Organizers said the playground is designed to promote a more active lifestyle for children and give them a safe place to play.

It's an invaluable gift for families that need it the most and for those donating hard work, seeing the smiles on children's faces makes it all worthwhile.

"It's such a good feeling you get inside just to know that you've made a difference in some young person's life," volunteer Wade Brown said.
