Bond denied for man accused of killing grandmother, aunt with hammer

'I truly believe he wants to kill me,' aunt wrote

COCOA, Fla. – A homeless man accused of brutally killing his aunt and grandmother was denied bond Wednesday by a Brevard County judge.

Marty Connell, 41, was charged Tuesday with two counts of first-degree murder.

Investigators said Connell admitted he beat to death Maxine Mills, 84, and her daughter Holly Crossman, 61.

Deputies said he called 911 Tuesday to confess.

"I have a problem, I killed a couple of people. They're family. They are my grandmother and my aunt," Connell said in the call.

More new details released Wednesday said Connell killed the women with a hammer.

The alleged manner of death was apparent to first responders when they got to the home on Eucalyptus Place.

"Attempted murder, possible assault with a hammer. Two patients, assault with a hammer, attempted murder," a responder could be heard saying via dispatch recordings.

Deputies said Connell told the 911 operator he wasn't sure why he killed Mills and Crossman and he was over at the family house to take a shower, which the homeless man said he does every week.

However, visiting the family home went against what a judge ordered six years ago when Crossman said her nephew randomly attacked her one day, punching her in the head, which resulted in a court order to keep Connell away from his aunt.

The injunction was active through Tuesday.

"I am in fear for my life. I truly believe he wants to kill me," Crossman wrote in 2010.

Connell will be represented at trial by the public defender. He remains at the Brevard County Jail without bond.
