ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Brandi Mokarzel was attempting to give CPR to her 3-year-old son on the floor of the apartment where she lived with her girlfriend's family when Orange County deputies arrived on July 7.
The first deputies on scene that afternoon knew Xavier Mokarzel-Satchel had been the victim of abuse.
"I think she did something to him, because he is bleeding from his ear," a deputy said to a paramedic entering the Eagle Landing apartment.
Paramedics ran out the apartment door with Xavier, his bare feet dangling out the bottom of his blue pajama bottoms, to an ambulance, body camera video shows.
Xavier was pronounced dead at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. Mokarzel's ex-girlfriend Lakasha Lewis, 28, and her mother Callen Barton, 58, are accused of beating the boy to death after deputies said the toddler drank milk from the jug and made a mess in the kitchen.
New records released by the Orange County Sheriff's Office to News 6 including audio, body camera video and extensive interviews show the relationship between Mokarzel and Lewis was deteriorating in the days before deputies say Xavier was beaten and thrown against a wall.
Deputies and witnesses described Xavier's small pale body as covered in bruises.
A window blind wand used to beat the 3-year-old was broken into at least eight pieces, according to evidence records by the Sheriff's Office.
Fighting 'all the time,' a plan to leave
Neighbors, witnesses and friends of Lewis and Mokarzel said the couple's relationship was volatile at best and abusive at worst.
The couple fought "all the time," a neighbor told deputies.
On July 7, Mokarzel told her friend in Texas that she was being abused by Lewis, but never said anything about Xavier. Mokarzel told the friend she wanted to move back to Texas or Washington where her mother lives, according to interviews with detectives.
She thought about going to a domestic violence shelter, but was worried authorities would take her son away, the friend said.
Neighbors said two days before Xavier died, Lewis pushed the toddler out of the house, telling Mokarzel that they couldn't stay there any more.
The night before Xavier was killed Mokarzel told Lewis said she was taking her son and leaving, multiple witnesses said.
Lewis threatened to run into traffic and kill herself if Mokarzel left.
The next morning Lewis would tell deputies Xavier ate all six Danimals, "opened a jug of milk drank that, ate graham crackers, ate frozen f-- waffles, every f--- thing."
Mokarzel told investigators Lewis beat her son with the window blind wand and Barton threw him against a wall.
When Mokarzel tried to call for help, Barton slapped the phone from her hands, records show.
Barton and Lewis are in jail awaiting trial on charges of first-degree murder and neglect of a child causing great bodily harm. If convicted they could be sentenced to death.
Mokarzel was charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm.
