Port Orange officer accidentally shoots himself, police say

Officer taken to hospital with leg injury

PORT ORANGE, Fla. – A Port Orange police officer accidentally shot himself Tuesday morning at a shooting range, officials with the New Smyrna Beach Police Department said.

The accident happened at 11 a.m. at 246 Industrial Park Ave., where the New Smyrna Beach Police Department is located.

The officer shot himself in the calf and was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said. He was in stable condition.

Officials from the Port Orange Police Department said around 4 p.m. that they would not be releasing the officer's name. They added that he is a new officer who is still in the new hire training cycle.

The accidental shooting is under investigation.
