Satellite Beach renters staying beyond move-out day imposed by new owner

Satellite Shores neighborhood to be replaced by high-end, gated community

SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. – Tuesday was move-out day at a beachside neighborhood that once housed the airmen of Patrick Air Force Base.

One hundred homes of the Satellite Shores neighborhood will be redeveloped into a higher-end community with houses topping $1 million, but there remain tenants who will not leave.

New ownership gave everyone three months to get out of Satellite Shores, off A1A, and most people did pick up and move on, but Denis and Anita Hanlon said they're prepared for a legal battle if they're forcefully removed.

The Hanlons signed a 12-month lease earlier this year that keeps them in their house until March.

"For the people who are still here, it's like today's D-Day," Denis Hanlon said about Tuesday.

When this old Air Force property was sold over the summer, tenants were told they had until Oct. 31 to get out.

Tuesday afternoon, there were no signs of bulldozers or eviction notices, so the Hanlons remain uncertain what might come next.

"We're going to see what happens next," Anita Hanlon said.

New since the summer, there's a gate in front of the neighborhood, which the Hanlons say they fear could be used to lock them in.

"Just screaming on the inside because I'm tense. I'm scared," Anita Hanlon said. "I don't know if they're going to take all of our stuff and put it out on the street and open the doors and let all the cats out."

Taking their lawyer's advice, the Hanlons are staying and demanding their lease be honored.

Other remaining neighbors did move out Tuesday afternoon.

Sage Murello's family said they know of other tenants even not having their security deposits returned.

News 6 called the new ownership, but just like back in July, the call went unreturned.

"It's already so expensive to live here. I don't know why make it even more so, but seems like the right business idea," Murello said.
