PONCE INLET, Fla. – An Edgewater man was bitten by a shark Tuesday while he was surfing in Ponce Inlet, according to Volusia County Beach Rescue officials.

A spokeswoman for the agency said the 29-year-old man had just hopped off his surfboard and into ankle-deep water after riding a wave when the 3.5-foot shark bit his toe.

Four bystanders reported seeing the same shark circling the area looking for mullet, officials said.

The man suffered a minor cut on his toe and was not taken to the hospital for further treatment, the spokeswoman said.

The incident marks the fifth shark bite in Volusia County this year, according to the agency.
