Rep. Stephanie Murphy will continue to represent Florida’s District 7 in the U.S. House after successfully defeating her Republican challenger Mike Miller.

District 7 includes parts of Orange and Seminole counties. Murphy was first elected to Congress in 2016, defeating former U.S. Rep. John Mica, who served 12 terms in Congress. It was her first run for public office.

The re-elected representative said she's focusing on fixing issues like Florida's opioid addiction crisis, expanding small business' access to low-interest loans and helping veterans adjust to civilian life.

"I hope to have a democratic leadership that will put together bills that I know my constituents want to see advance, whether that's health care or infrastructure," Murphy said. "There are so many issues that are so important to the day-to-day lives of American people. They are tired of having those bills caught up in the partisan bickering."

In her victory speech, Murphy stressed the importance of being willing to work with lawmakers to pass bills that benefit Floridians.

"My allegiance will always be to the people I represent, not to any political party, but to the Constitution of the United States," Murphy said.

Murphy is a former businesswoman, educator at Rollins College and national security specialist with the U.S. Department of Defense. Her family moved to the U.S. when she was an infant after fleeing from Vietnam.

She lives in Winter Park with her husband and two children.

During Murphy’s first two years in Congress, she was assigned to the Armed Services and Small Business committees.

Murphy easily secured her spot on the November ballot with 85 percent of the vote in the August Florida primary.
