EDGEWATER, Fla. – A 73-year-old man ran over and killed his grandson while pulling a drag-style race car into a garage on Wednesday, according to the Edgewater Police Department.
Authorities said the incident happened on the 300 block of West Marion Avenue at about 5:45 p.m.
When first responders arrived, they found 8-year-old Connor Allen dead at the scene, according to a news release.
Edgewater Police said Roland Robidoux, the child's grandfather, was pulling a drag-style race car into the garage when he struck Connor.
Neighbor Shawn Wilson, who lives upstairs in the industrial complex, said he heard a loud noise outside and came out to help.
"All of a sudden, we hear a huge screeching noise," Wilson said.
Wilson said the child's grandfather was frantically searching for the boy.
"He was just kind of throwing his hands up, yelling for his grandson and as soon as I pointed him out, he just kind of started to break down for a second," Wilson said.
Neighbors said the child's grandparents live upstairs in the building and that they had their grandson over to visit.
"It hurts. I feel so sorry for their family," Wilson said. "They are going to have to go through such a horrible ordeal."
Edgewater Police came back to the scene on Thursday to check on the well-being of the grandfather.
The incident is under investigation. Connor's family has organized a GoFundMe to pay for funeral expenses. You can donate here.
