Teen arrested after toy gun causes code red alert at New Smyrna Beach High

18-year-old student taken into custody, officials say

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A code red alert was issued at New Smyrna Beach High School Thursday after a student had an airsoft gun on campus, Volusia County school district officials said.

A spokesperson for the school district said a student who saw 18-year-old Keevin Jelks with the gun notified an administrator, who told the school resource deputy about it.

When officials found Jelks on campus and searched him for the airsoft gun, they were not able to find it and placed the school on lockdown in order to search campus, according to Volusia County deputies.

The gun was found a short time later in a trash can in front of one of the school buildings.

Jelks was arrested and charged with disruption of a school function and violation of probation, according to the arrest report.

The code red alert was lifted a short time later, officials said.
